Change – You Can Handle It!

Part 1

Why do you need to accept change is a part of life?

By Wendy Collier, B. Ed.

Summary: I used to hate change but now I say, ‘thank goodness for change’, otherwise our lives would not improve. Learn how you can see change as a good thing.

“We’ve always done it this way.”

“We tried that years ago and it didn’t work.”

“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”

“What do you mean you’re leaving?”

“You seemed so happy.”

If you’ve heard others say any of those statements or even heard yourself saying them, there’s nothing wrong with you. There are simply some skills you need to learn. I used to hate change but now I say, ‘thank goodness for change’, otherwise our lives would not improve. No matter how great our life is, there’s always some aspect we’d like to have better.

The difference now is that change is happening on a daily basis. Sometimes, it is even moment to moment. You barely have a chance to deal with a change and another one comes along, then another, then one more, then the “big” one, then the one that ‘broke the camel’s back’; you can see how quickly it can become overwhelming and stressful.

A friend of mine brought her 6 month old granddaughter to meet us and since then, we’ve seen her every couple of months. The last time I saw her, I was amazed at the changes I saw in her. I realized that she is such a good example of how life is changing and moving forward every day. There really isn’t much that stays the same.

The first step is to acknowledge and accept that change is a fundamental part of life. It always has been, just look at nature or your children’s growth.
