Read a chapter from Book 7 A
Chosen Child:
Kyle, his Mom, and his Dad were at the
cabin on the lake with his Grandma and Papa. His aunt and
cousins were also part of the group sitting around the fire pit.
They were laughing and having fun. They were telling stories,
poking the fire and roasting marshmallows. The evening was spent
reminding each other of all the fun experiences they had at the
cabin.
There was a comfortable silence that
fell over this close family. It was a silence that did not need
to be filled with small talk - a silence that was simply enjoyed
and appreciated. Each person was relaxed and feeling at peace.
Kyle decided it was time to ask. He
gently broke the silence with his soft voice. Everyone paid
attention. “This past year at school we had a lot of new kids
join our class. They came from all different areas of the world
and were moved here for different reasons. The most fascinating
thing is that all of them are like me.”
Kyle’s mom, Marla, spoke first, “In what
way are they like you?”
“They are all adopted!” exclaimed Kyle.
The adults were stunned. They said all
at once: “No way!” “What are the odds?” “Really?” “How is that
possible?”
“I can’t believe that!” “That’s truly
amazing.” “Unbelievable.”
Kyle’s dad, Calvin, looked at him and asked, “Did you tell them
you were adopted?”
“I did because I wanted them to tell me
how they actually felt and what their experiences were like,”
responded Kyle. “Somehow, I knew they would eventually all come
to me and tell me their stories, and they did.”
“How did they feel about being adopted?”
asked Grandma.
“Well, most of them were scared and a
little unsure of themselves. They didn’t know what to do when
the other kids at school questioned them about their parents and
their families,” Kyle explained. “I told them what Mom had
taught me - that families are very different in structure now. A
family can be made up of any number of adults and children.”
“That was an important thing to share,
Kyle because an Aunt or Grandma can even be the mom,” Marla,
affirmed.
Were the other kids feeling bad or getting teased about being
adopted? How did Kyle help his classmates? What specific things
did Kyle experience that makes him feel lucky and blessed to be
adopted?
